Committee Elections 2026: Shape the Future of Our Collective

The Birkbeck Short Filmmaking Society is a student-led collective built on collaboration, creativity, and professional standards. Elections are your opportunity to select the leadership team that will guide our production slate, workshops, and industry events for the upcoming academic year.

Whether you want to lead from the front, manage the logistics of our sets, or handle the financial architecture of our films, we want to hear from you.

🛠️ Available Committee Roles

To remain an active and operating student group next year, our society must elect students into three core leadership positions. Below are the roles open for nomination:

1. Chair

  • The Vision: The Chair is the visionary leader and the face of the society. You will oversee all activity, from workshop series to film screenings, ensuring we stay true to our creative mission. You will act as the key reference point for our members, the committee, the Students’ Union, and external organisations.
  • Creative Leadership: Coordinate the society’s annual calendar, ensuring a balance between practical filmmaking workshops and social screenings.
  • Official Liaison & Representation: Act as the primary point of contact between our society and the BSU Activities Team. Represent the society at Activities General Meetings and official Union events.
  • Team Support: Provide guidance to other committee members and delegate tasks to ensure a balanced workload.

2. Vice-Chair

  • The Vision: The Vice-Chair is the organisational backbone of the society, ensuring our sets run smoothly by handling the logistics that allow our members to create. You ensure the efficient, democratic, and transparent running of the committee, promoting full participation at all member meetings.
  • Logistics & Room Bookings: Use the official Room Booking system to secure lecture theatres for screenings or studios for workshops.
  • Member Engagement: Manage membership records and act as the friendly first point of contact for student enquiries.
  • Administrative Support: Record minutes for committee meetings, manage internal documentation, and assist the Chair in delivering a consistent experience for all members.

3. Treasurer

  • The Vision: The Treasurer is responsible for the financial health of the society, ensuring our financial matters run smoothly. You make sure we have the funds to hire filmmaking equipment, book external venues, or cater our premiere nights.
  • Financial Planning: Collaborate with the Activities Manager to set and agree on our annual membership budget. Use the Student Group Budget Tracker to keep real-time records of income and expenditure.
  • Grant Applications: Lead applications for Development Grants or sponsorships to help fund more ambitious film projects.
  • Fiscal Responsibility: Ensure all spending follows Union guidelines and that our Reserve Account remains healthy for future years.

🗳️ How to Cast Your Vote

🔒 The Voting Booth is Closed

The secure ballot will open here at 9:00 AM on Monday 8th June and will close strictly at 11:59 PM on Friday 12th June.

  • One Member, One Vote: Every standard member holds exactly one vote, conducted by a completely secure, anonymous ballot.
  • The ‘RON’ Option: In accordance with Students’ Union regulations, ‘Re-Open Nominations’ (RON) is included as a candidate for all three positions. If you feel no candidate is suitable for a role, you may cast your vote for RON.
